THE NIUSAT - STUDENT SATELLITE INITITATIVE

The objective of NIUSAT initiative is to empower the institution with satellite technology and substantially enable our students to have access to satellite technology which may result in an social uplifting.

An initial step we have taken to move ahead is by launching a nano-satellite “NIUSAT – NOORUL ISLAM STUDENT NANO-SATELLITE”. It has been a dream project of the President, NOORUL ISLAM UNIVERSITY, Dr. A. P. MAJEED KHAN and the Vice-President - Mr. M. S. FYSAL KHAN,  Who have decided to fund the current project with $1 million (5 Crore INR).

The NIUSAT Programme at present is being mentored and guided by the Programme Director – Prof. Dr. A. E. MUTHUNAYAGAM, the Father of Propulsion Technology in Indian Space Programme. The NIUSAT programme has over 150 students linked to it, who are further guided by a think tank of consultants (former-senior scientists and experts from ISRO).

Dr. A. P. Majeed Khan, President - Noorul Islam University ,and  Dr. A. E. Muthunayagam, Advisor - Noorul Islam University, Dr, K, A, Janardhanan, Director - HRM and  Mr. M. S. Fysal Khan, the Vice-President - Noorul Islam University with G. Madhavan Nair the former Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation and Secretary to the Department of Space, Government of India

Our NIUSAT - Nano satellite weighing around 12kg is being designed and developed with a Miniature Wide Field Sensor (MWiFS) for agriculture and disaster management support applications. The imagery from the NIUSAT would be used for identifying potential agricultural diseases affecting crops and shall also provide timely assistance for Disaster Management Support Program. The satellite is being developed considering and focusing on all risky variables faced in the different phases of student satellite development to deployment.

The prime objective of our NIUSAT initiative is not just to launch a satellite into space. But, to enable new entrants in the industry/next generation students and aerospace aspirants, by creating a Knowledge centre named “NIUSAT – CENTTRE FOR EXCELLENCE” for the empowering them. Focusing the welfare of our nation as a whole and empowering our university with the know-how of aerospace technologies and innovations.

Apart from proposed launch of our current satellite NIUSAT, we have a long-term vision of launching a constellation of satellites that may help us updated, upgrade technology, and equip ourselves with vivid payloads that may meet our timely demand, and extend our helping hands to the up-coming batch of students who may have a hands-on experience in state-of-the-art technology. This initiative is proposed to be global, where we welcome other international institutions, students and agencies to share their knowledge, expertise technology and know-how.

Project Manager - NIUSAT
